In 2005, we offered the duck beak treatment service, with the development of the machine with our partner Nova Tech Eng. Since 2008, we are testing the claw treatment on day old ducklings with various prototypes and measurements on ducklings with our partnership with Nova Tech Eng in order to offer this service.
On Muscovy duck the debeaking and nails cutting are done at the farm. On Mulard duck since the outbreak on IA, ducklings are raised indoor and therefore to keep them calmer they are doing nails cutting. For a better performance but also for welfare issues as well as new social attend.
Our first engagement was to offer those services at the hatchery on day old ducklings in order to avoid any intervention in the farm. Otherwise, the European law is against any interventions after 10 days of age. It was then very important to come with solution in the hatchery. Nowadays, some farmers and some production organisation have validated that hatchery claw treatment was better than when it was done at the farm with mechanical equipment and with less traumas on the birds. This complementary service adds to the other services already available for the farmers: the beak and claw treatment and the vaccination. This system avoids doing those interventions during the rearing.
